Summer in Los Angeles has a way of sneaking up on your body.

One day you're enjoying the longer evenings, the next you're three weeks deep into a season of overheated sleep, dehydrated muscles, and a calendar that somehow got busier than ever. Weddings. Hikes. Dehydrated muscle tissue is stiffer, crampier, and slower to recover. Add in a packed summer social calendar and the low hum of stress that never fully shuts off in this city, and you've got a recipe for tension that builds without you noticing.

A few things I see on my table every single summer:

The Case for Bringing the Massage to You

Now, here's where I get a little opinionated.

The reason I don't love the idea of dragging yourself to a spa in the summer is the whole experience working against the point. You sit in traffic on the 405 in a hot car. You arrive a little frazzled. You finally relax, sort of, and then you have to get dressed, walk back out into the heat, and drive home through more traffic. By the time you're back, half the calm is already gone.

This is something my philosophy has shifted on over the years, and it's worth explaining.

People often book by category. They want a deep tissue massage or a Swedish massage or a sports massage, because those are the terms everyone knows. And I understand the appeal of knowing what you're getting.

But bodies don't actually work in neat categories. The way I practice now, every session is a custom therapeutic massage that pulls from all of those modalities based on what your body needs that day. Some areas might need slow, deep pressure. Others might need gentle, broad strokes to coax your nervous system into letting go. Your sun-tightened shoulders might want one thing while your hiking legs want another. Sometimes I'll fold in myofascial release or dynamic cupping if your tissue is asking for it.

That's why I always do an intake with new clients on our first session. I want to understand what's going on with you, what you're dealing with, and what you actually want out of our time together. Then I build the session around that, rather than running you through a fixed routine that ignores what your body is telling me.

Summer bodies in particular tend to be a mix. You're a little more active, a little more dehydrated, a little more stressed, and a little more sun-worn all at once. A flexible, responsive approach handles that far better than a rigid one.

Simple Summer Self-Care, Beyond the Table

A massage every few weeks does a lot, but it works best alongside a few easy habits. None of these are revolutionary. They're just the things that actually move the needle.

  • Drink more water than you think you need. Hydrated muscle is happy muscle. Dehydration makes everything tighter and slower to recover.

  • Protect your sleep. Cool, dark room, fan or AC running. Bad summer sleep is one of the biggest hidden sources of tension I see.

  • Move, but recover too. Hike, swim, and run all you want. Just give your body a chance to bounce back between efforts. If you're the type who never takes a day off, this one's for you.

  • Don't wait until you're in pain. The best time for bodywork is before the tension turns into a problem, not after.
